Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.
The site, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.
There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.
RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to remove terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."
In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The U.N. reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
