A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its role in national projects. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over construction quality.

In reaction, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in complete adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
