The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations at play, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
