Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
