Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in several conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Before this match, he revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here against them. They were the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
